Ultracapacitor or Supercapacitor is an electrochemical double-layer capacitors ( EDLC ) having high energy and power density. Due to unique properties of Ultra-capacitors, they find applications in many areas. In this paper, two applications are specifically stressed upon namely ride through and energy efficiency. This paper studies and compares various energy-saving elevator systems using Ultracapacitors, capable of storing regenerated energy and capable of discharging the stored energy during operation. Based on literature review six different drive configurations has been discussed. In all eight different DC-DC converter topologies have been discussed to be used for ultra-capacitor energy saving systems.
